As I understand it, SIT and ACT are the same on this point insofar as both invite the client to be open to their experience, sort through their own values, and make choices about how to live based on those freely chosen values (rather than being told what to do by religious groups, therapists, or others). To the best of my knowledge, neither ACT nor SIT promote orientiation change, but rather a way of living. I have only limited exposure to SIT (but considerably more to ACT), so it's possible I may be mis-construing something, but I'm pretty sure the two are highly compatible.

I believe the other major point of overlap is that SIT acknoweldges (to the best of my understanding) that some people will choose not to make their sexual orientation a fundamental part of their identity but rather retain it as a consistent part of their experience (e.g., those who identify as same-sex attracted but not "gay" or "lesbian" or "bisexual"). For members of that group, ACT can offer one way of framing that distinction.

Dear Dr Yarhouse,
I am a Relationship Counselor practicing in Queensland, Australia. I recently worked with a Christian client ( I'm a Christian also) whose marriage is in danger of failing because his Christian wife wife is enormously frustrated and tormented by the fact that he is disinclined to want her sexually and she believes that he is homosexual. They are currently living apart from each other. On the Epstein scale, this man came up as being marginally more heterosexual than homosexual. He was sexually abused by a strange man at a school swimming gala when he was a young boy and has had several homosexual liaisons as an adolescent and young man. He is now in his late 30s. They have two young children together. He was recently counseled by a church pastor with some counselling background I am told . This counselling was more by way of trauma counselling for the sexual abuse incident, I was told. They have tried the Masters and Johnson "Sensate Focus" exercises but without success.
Can I refer them to you? If so how?

Dear Dr. Throckmorton,
I am the mother of a son that suffered with GID and subsequently committed suicide in 2009. I am now finishing a book relating my experiences through that troubled time. I know I will get a lot of pushback as we did not condone his choice. My question to you is, have you found any bona fide scientific research that has been done in this area? Are there any Christian groups for families that they could get help from? I would be thankful for a dialogue along these lines. Thank you for any help you can give me.

I am a junior at UNCG, a very devout Christian but one thing...I am a lesbian. Reading this, made me smile so big to know that someone was impacted on DOS. It's a serious matter and it's devastating at all those Christians, who are supposed to be showing God's love to all, are nit picking and filtering out who is and who isn't allowed to join, serve or get bapstized because of their sexual orientation. If a homosexual wants to fully give their life to Christ and use their relationship to glorify and honor him...how is this such a crime? I really appreciate this post.
